My Daughter Shivered After Every Bath—Until She Pointed Under the Bathroom Sink

The first thing I did before we moved in was hire a carpenter to take the lock off the bathroom door and replace the dark vanity cabinet with an open wooden shelf where every towel, bubble bath bottle, and rubber duck sat in plain sight in the sunshine.

For the first two months, we didn’t use the bathtub at all—only warm, five-minute showers with the bathroom door wide open and Disney songs playing loudly from a speaker on the kitchen counter.

Then, on a rainy Saturday evening in April, Clara walked into the hallway holding her yellow duck towel and a bottle of strawberry-scented bubble bath she had picked out at the grocery store herself.

“Mommy,” she asked, looking up at me with bright, steady eyes that hadn’t flinched in weeks. “Can we make big pink bubbles tonight? With you sitting on the rug the whole time?”

I knelt down on the hardwood floor and kissed the top of her head.

“As long as you want, baby,” I told her. “And you say when we’re done.”

Ten minutes later, the bathroom smelled like warm strawberries and steam. The door stood wide open to the hallway, where her stuffed lamb sat on a sunny patch of rug. Clara splashed warm foam onto my sleeves, laughing so hard her cheeks turned pink, while down in the kitchen the only timer we owned anymore chimed softly to tell us the chocolate-chip cookies were ready to come out of the oven.
