Michael Slept Through Date Night—Then I Found My Signature in His Folder

I was angry with Michael longer than he wanted me to be. The forged signature was not his doing, but the secret had made room for it. Some evenings we talked until we understood each other; some evenings we only managed dinner and an early bed. He gave me the passwords to everything. I told him I didn’t want to be his supervisor. I wanted to be his partner, including when the news was bad.

The case ended the following spring. Tyler pleaded guilty to fraud and forgery. Russ pleaded guilty to theft and wage violations after the other employees testified. A court ordered restitution. Selling Russ’s equipment and a rental property repaid most of our savings over the next year; his company paid Michael’s unpaid wages before it closed. There were costs we never recovered, and no one offered us back the months of fear.

Jenna and Tyler broke up before the hearing. She and I did not become what we had been. She had been careless with my trust, and she knew it. Once, after she testified, she hugged me outside the courthouse and apologized. I hugged her back, then went home with Michael.

We bought a house two years later. It was smaller than the one on Mulberry Lane, with a kitchen that needed work and a narrow yard where the grass struggled under a pear tree. Both our names were on the offer. We sat together while the attorney explained every page, and I signed only after I had read it.

On our first night there, Michael fell asleep on the bedroom floor while assembling a secondhand bed frame. One boot was on; the other lay by the door. I stood over him with a blanket in my hands and remembered how frightened I had been the night I found our account empty.

I covered him, then sat beside him until he woke.

“Did I finish it?” he asked, looking at the bed frame.

“Not yet.”

He reached for the instructions, but I put my hand over his. The window was open. Outside, wind moved through the pear leaves, and beyond them I could see the little stretch of ground that belonged to us.

“We’ll do it together in the morning,” I said.

Michael set the instructions down. He took my hand, rough fingers closing around mine, and this time neither of us had to guess what the other knew.
