My Daughter’s Back Named Her Husband—Then the Surgeon Turned Pale

detain me.”

“Perhaps not,” I said. “But they have authority to investigate why a patient arrived unconscious through a restricted entrance with medication in her system that you ordered in advance.”

The confidence left his eyes, replaced by calculation.

Daniel’s voice returned on the recording.

“You’re making this worse, Emily. Sign the authorization, and we can fix the rest privately.”

“You emptied the account my mother left me.”

“Temporarily.”

“You mortgaged our home twice.”

“I had a liquidity problem.”

“You paid Alan to say I was unstable.”

A pause followed.

Then Alan’s voice entered the recording.

“Daniel, enough.”

There was no mistaking him.

The former colleague standing three feet from me closed his eyes.

On the phone, Alan spoke to Emily in the calm, paternal tone he had once used with frightened patients.

“You’re upset. You haven’t been sleeping. Let us take you somewhere quiet and talk.”

“You mean your closed clinic?”

“I mean somewhere private.”

“I already sent copies of everything to my father.”

That was a bluff. I had received nothing from Emily.

But the recording captured the effect it had on both men.

Daniel cursed.

Alan’s voice hardened. “Where did you send them?”

“You’ll find out when he opens them.”

There was a sudden scuffle. Emily shouted. A chair toppled. Fabric tore near the phone’s microphone.

The monogrammed strip in the evidence bag had likely come from that moment.

Daniel said, “She took part of my shirt.”

Alan replied, “Then take it back.”

Emily’s breathing became fast and uneven. Her phone slid or fell, because the next few seconds sounded distant.

Daniel spoke again. “You said you could make her look confused.”

“I can.”

“Then do it.”

The recording filled with footsteps.

After that came a click, Emily’s gasp, and the phone scraping against the floor.

The audio continued, but the voices moved farther away. We heard a door close. Then there were several minutes of near silence.

The nurse paused the playback.

No one needed to hear more until the police arrived.

Alan looked at me as though we were still colleagues debating a difficult case.

“Daniel coerced me,” he said quietly. “You heard him. He was desperate. He threatened to expose private debts and destroy my career.”

“So you falsified a medical report about my daughter.”

“It was never meant to be used.”

“It was used to remove her control over her own money.”

“I intended to correct it.”

“After Daniel finished stealing from her?”

His mouth tightened.

“You’re angry. I understand. But I am the reason she is alive.”

Emily made a small sound behind me.

I turned.

“No,” she whispered. “He thought I was dead.”

Alan stopped breathing for a beat.

I bent closer so she would not have to raise her voice.

“Tell me what you remember.”

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel left. He said he needed an alibi. Alan stayed.”

Her hand trembled beneath mine.

“He kept asking where the copies were. I wouldn’t tell him. He said Daniel had lied to both of us and that he was not going to lose everything for him.”

The words on her back flashed through my mind.

HE LIED TO YOU TOO.

I had assumed the message was directed at me.

It was not.

Alan had been speaking to himself.

Daniel had promised
